    The House

The history of the University of Western Ontario chapter of Delta Upsilon is reflective of the general fraternity atmosphere across North America.

During the "Golden Years" of the 1930's to 1960's, fraternities were seen as training grounds for men of wealth, prominence, and power. Delta Upsilon was the most prestigious social organization at the University of Western Ontario. The Alumni Room composites are basically a mural of the most successful medical and businessmen from our university with graduates such as Ivey, Weldon, Robarts, Fowler, and Blackburn passing through this time.

By the 1970's, the "Animal House" era brought the word "fraternity" to become affiliated with wild parties, sexual promiscuity, alcohol, and drug abuse. Always striving to be the best, Delta Upsilon became one of the most popular fraternities of this period at the University of Western Ontario campus. However, by the end of the 1990's, this era had taken its toll with many fraternity chapters and their governing institutions suffering from alienated alumni, personal injuries, property damage, and lawsuits. Our chapter was no exception. A reorganization of fraternity operations was decided upon by both the Active Chapter and Alumni Board in the Fall of 1998. This also coincided with risk avoidance and alcohol awareness initiatives being strongly enforced on all chapters by Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Headquarters.

The new millennium has ushered in a new era for our chapter. Failing to adapt to the current age of high legal liability, bad publicity, and increasing tuition causing attrition on the number of Greeks on campus, many other fraternities have recently folded or are barely surviving. Delta Upsilon is one of the few fraternities that are currently on the rise. In other words, "We're back!"

Just like the "Golden Years", we would also like to place a priority in teaching and allowing our members to develop the personal skills to become successful in their future endeavors. However, we also want the undergraduate period in the fraternity to be some of the best moments of our lives enjoyed during the "Animal House" era but a new focus on loss prevention and personal responsibility has been implemented to emphasize the well being of both our members and organization. The foundation has already been established. The direction we take is up to you.

THE LEGEND OF DANIEL REGAN? (1958)

The house on 294 Central is said to be haunted by the ghost of Daniel Regan. After being found guilty of poisoning her husband and children, Mrs. Regan was sentenced to death and hung by the London courts in 1898. Considered eternally cursed, sounds of crying children and angry supernatural occurrences by their murder, the house was passed off from one owner to another. Driven to the edge of fear and insanity, a prominent doctor promptly sold the house to a University of Western Ontario fraternity where it has remained in their possession ever since.

    HOME SWEET HOME (2010)

Canada's Worst Handyman 5 of the Discovery Channel has chosen the DU house on 294 Central as the setting for their new season. With the house in dire need of renovations, Canada's Worst Handyman has come to the rescue by renovating all the rooms and the creation of 3 new bedrooms from the once huge loft.
